Position Summary:

 

Assist special education teachers to provide for the instructional needs of students with disabilities.  Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including behavior management and instructional programs.  Assist individual and small groups of students with their assignments.  Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the Special Education teacher.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification

• Associate’s degree or equivalent from an accredited College or University (preferred)
• Six months to one year related experience or training (preferred)
• Teacher’s Certificate recommended but not required
• Experience working with students with disabilities (preferred)
• 6+ months experience working for Public or Private School

• Passion for students, especially students with disabilities
• Ability and patience to work interactively with students, especially students with disabilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong computer skills to implement multiple and diverse programs
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships

 

Responsibilities and Duties

• Prepare educational materials and displays for the classroom with the assistance of the classroom teacher.
• Assist in lesson planning and instructing curriculum.
• Assist teacher in handling administrative records and reports.
• Help substitute teachers with classroom layout, or other prertinent classroom mangement.
• Assist with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment.

 

Student Managment

• Assist in student behavior mangament.  This includes handling crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
• Take responsiblity for learning and conforming to each student's needs.
• Coordinate educational activities assigned by the teacher; help individual students of small groups.
• Assist in overseeing students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom.  This includes lunchroom, bus and play group duty.
• Ensure confidentiality.
• Enhance job skills by participating with staff development programs.
• Be active in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
